Role of the Community Sports Club

Citizens are starting to pay more attention to health and have been improving their physical health by exercising and playing sports. To further promote “Sport For All”, the LCSD has launched the “Community Sports Club Project” to help National Sports Associations (NSAs) set up community sports clubs, as well as to provide technical support and funding for these community-based organizations, so as to promote a variety of sports at the community level and provide the public with a diverse selection.

The Community Sports Clubs are mainly set up by sports enthusiasts to organize all sorts of training and competitions in their spare time, as well as to bring together people who love sports in their community and encourage exchanges with other sports clubs. If these sports clubs have already become affiliated with the relevant NSAs, the NSAs might provide them a recommendation for participation in the “Community Sports Club Project”. The LCSD will provide member clubs of the “Community Sports Club Project” with technical support and funding to help achieve the following objectives:

(i) promote and strengthen the sports development for young players;
(ii) enhance the standard of sports at community level; and
(iii) encourage lifelong participation in sports.

All participants of the Community Sports Club Project must be affiliated with an NSA. As long as they meet the relevant requirements, they can submit an application to the LCSD through their affiliated NSA to become a community sports club under their NSA. For details, please visit the website

Promotion of “Sport For All Day”

The establishment of community sports clubs has increased the activity of sports development at the district level and has a positive effect on encouraging citizens to participate in sports. The project has been developing ideally so far and has attracted a lot of media attention. The DBC managed to interview one of the community sports clubs - Chun Yuen Sports Club earlier and asked the club to share its experiences, talk about the development of their activities and promote “Sport For All Day 2015”.

Introducing a Community Handball Club - Chun Yuen Sports Club

Handball has become increasingly popular in Hong Kong and there are currently 21 community handball clubs in Hong Kong, one of which is Chun Yuen Sports Club. Chun Yuen Sports Club was founded by handball athlete, Mr Tang Wan Chuen. He believed that handball wasn’t very popular in Hong Kong and that it would be necessary to work at the community level to increase people’s awareness and participation of this sport. As a result, he founded the sports club in 2002 with its base in Sha Tin to train athletes and promote handball. After 10 years of development, Chun Yuen Sports Club now has nearly 100 handball athletes. In addition to sending teams to participating in competitions, the club also organizes competitions and invites handball teams from other community sports clubs to participate to promote exchanges.

Cooperation between community sports clubs and schools

Chun Yuen Sports Club has also been proactively promoting handball on school grounds to discover and train new talent. Tsang Wing Hong who attends PLK C W Chu College is one such athlete who is part of Chun Yuen Sports Club. He became really interested in this sport after trying it out for the first time at school, so he joined Chun Yuen Sports Club to receive further training and take part in competitions. He recently became a member of the Hong Kong youth representative team and will soon represent Hong Kong in the National Secondary Students Handball Championships. This promising young handball athlete’s developments are inspiring to us all. His devotion to training and the careful efforts of the club have injected a new force into Hong Kong’s sports scene.
