The biennial sports event of Hong Kong is about to be launched! The 6th Hong Kong Games (HKG) will be held from 23 April to 28 May 2017. The selection of athletes representing the 18 districts is being completed. The athletes are actively preparing for competitions, getting ready to win glory for their districts.
To bring to life the slogan of the Games, “Our City, Our Games”, the organising committee organised a number of activities for the public. These included the highly popular Star-studded Classroom, which consisted of Elite Athletes' Demonstration and Exchange Programmes of eight sports and sports lectures. They attracted an attendance of more than 1,600. The Vitality Run, which was first organised in the last HKG, was organised on 8 January at Shing Mun River in Shatin to enable families or groups of friends to enjoy the fun of sport together. Since the last Vitality Run was warmly supported by the public and quotas for participants were quickly filled, the committee increased the quotas and extended the distance of the 8 km category to 10 km. This allowed participants to have a taste of long-distance running.
The Vitality Run was meant for everyone. It wasn’t a competition. Each participant received a T-shirt and other souvenirs. Those who completed the run within the time limit received a certificate and a souvenir medal. The committee encouraged participants to dress up and compete for the Most Creative Costume Prize and the Overall Best Team Costume Prize.
The quotas of the Vitality Run were filled on the first day of enrolment. A lot of citizens showed up on the day of the event and cheered the runners on along the course. They took part in activities organised at the Sha Tin Sports Ground and Yuen Wo Playground, which included booth games, activities in the family area and the photo corner, and stage performances. They enjoyed a pleasant morning with the runners and ushered in the upcoming 6th Hong Kong Games.
The 6th Hong Kong Games are organised by the Sports Commission, co-ordinated by the Community Sports Committee and co-organised by the 18 District Councils, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and relevant sports associations. The Games include eight popular sports: athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Competing teams are organised by the 18 district councils.
A lot of activities are organised by the Hong Kong Games. The 18 Districts' Pledging cum Carnival, the voting for My Favourite Sporty District, the contest for guessing the Overall Champion of the 6th Hong Kong Games, the Cheering Team Competition for the 18 Districts and the Dynamic Moments Photo Contest will be launched.
