International Sports Facilities of Tsuen Wan Sports Centre

Tsuen Wan Sports Centre

Have our residents of Tsuen Wan discovered the new building that is in construction at the Tsuen Wan promenade? Built on the shore facing the Rambler Channel, it is adjacent to Tsuen Wan Park and is a walking distance of around 10 minutes from the Tsuen Wan West Station. This isn’t a new residential building: it is the Tsuen Wan Sports Centre that opened in October last year.

Tsuen Wan Sports Centre is located at No. 53 Wing Shun Street, Tsuen Wan. It has a total gross floor area of about 12,000 square metres and is a five-storey building with a glass curtain wall and abundant natural light. It is the latest sports facility in the district.

The wall is 15 metres high and 12 metres wide, with five climbing routes and various difficulty levels, making it an ideal training and competition venue for climbing enthusiasts. The sports centre also has the first children’s playroom in the district, which has an area of more than 200 square metres. This playroom has a marine theme interior and is spacious. There are slides, tunnels, padded steps and climbing facilities, etc., in the playroom, making it a great place for parents and children to have fun together.

The second floor of the sports centre is a multi-purpose main hall that can be used as a basketball court, volleyball court or badminton court. The sports centre is open to daily use by the public and also caters to the need to host local or international large-scale sports events. The main hall has fixed stands and folding stands that can accommodate 1,900 spectators, and the secondary hall on the ground floor also has 200 fixed seats. The sports centre also has a doping test room that is dedicated for use during international events, and has other auxiliary facilities such as lighting, broadcasting, and broadband ready for use.

Other facilities of the sports centre include a multi-purpose activity room, table tennis room and dance studio, as well as a fitness room on the 4th floor facing the sea, which means that people there can exercise while enjoying the sights of the Rambler Channel.

With the opening of the Tsuen Wan Sports Centre, there are now five sports centres in the district. The other four sports centres are Tsuen King Circuit Sports Centre, Tsuen Wan West Sports Centre, Wai Tsuen Sports Centre and Yeung UK Road Sports Centre. As they say, “exercising daily is good for you, stay active”, so my friends in Tsuen Wan, you don’t have any more excuses to be lazy now!

Sports Training Programmes for Persons with Disabilities (PWD)

Sports Training Programmes for Persons with Disabilities

To encourage persons with disabilities to participate actively in sports activities, the LCSD launched the Sports Training Programmes for Persons with Disabilities to provide more opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in sports activities so that they can experience the joys of playing sports while maintaining their physical and mental health.

With the professional advice provided by respective national sports associations of sports for PWDs, the contents of these courses are devised to suit the needs of PWDs. The types of sports training include badminton, bocce, floor hockey, table tennis, body-mind stretching and fitness exercise, and are completely free.

The author visited the training venue earlier to observe the body-mind stretching and fitness exercise course designed for PWDs. In the classroom, the instructor guides the participants as they do simple stretching exercises, such as holding a ball or lying on their backs, which are suitable for participants to practice on their own, helps them understand the structure of their own bodies, and improves the condition of their joints, waist and abdomen.

Pilot Scheme for Priority Booking of Facilities at Designated Venues by Organisations of People with Disabilities

Sports Training Programmes for Persons with DisabilitiesThe LCSD launched the Pilot Scheme for Priority Booking of Facilities at Designated Venues by Organisations of People with Disabilities last year to allow relevant groups to prioritise bookings at four designated sports centres, including the facilities at Chai Wan Sports Centre, Shun Lee Tsuen Sports Centre, Yuen Chau Kok Sports Centre and Yuen Long Sports Centre during off-peak hours, to facilitate the organisation of sports events that are suitable for PWDs. The LCSD will conduct a detailed review after the pilot is completed in March this year, which will include consideration of the suitability of extending the arrangements for priority booking of facilities to other venues.
