The Summer Youth Olympic Games, which is held every four years, was held successfully from 6 to 18 October last year. Many athletes of Hong Kong won the qualifications to participate in the games, which enabled them to compete and have exchanges with athletes of other countries to improve their strength and gain experience.
The Summer Youth Olympic Games held in summer last year was the third running of the event since its inception in 2010. The slogan of the games was “Feel the Future” and was held in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. A total of 32 sports events were held. The event was attended by delegations from 206 countries, and more than 3800 elite athletes aged between 15 and 18 participated in the competitions. Kosovo and South Sudan were first-time participants in this event.
The 12-day event attracted more than 1 million spectators, who flocked over to Buenos Aires from all over the world to witness the birth of 744 medals.
The Hong Kong sports delegation has always been dispatched to participate in this world-level sports event. This year, a total of 25 young athletes were sent to participate in 9 competitions, which included athletics, beach handball, equestrian, fencing, rowing, sailing, swimming, table tennis and triathlon.
The Hong Kong team won a total of two silver medals and one bronze medal this year. Among them, Kaylin Hsien, the flag bearer for the Hong Kong delegation in the opening ceremony, won two medals herself. This athlete, who is known as “Young Queen of Fencing” won the silver medal in the Epee event and intercontinental mixed team event. Addis Wong achieved his personal best score in the boys’ 110m hurdles with a total time of 27.13 seconds to win a bronze medal, winning the Hong Kong team its first medal in athletics at the Summer Youth Olympic Games.
Although the Hong Kong team had not won medals in the other sports events, the athletes still did their best and achieved great results. Natalie Kan achieved the result of 1 minute 21 seconds in the 100m butterfly event and finished in 7th place. Mak Cheuk Wing also managed to take 8th place in the girls Techno 293+ sailing event.
In the Summer Youth Olympic Games this year, Russia won 59 medals: 28 gold medals, 18 silver medals and 12 bronze medals, making it the greatest winner. In second place was China with 36 medals: 18 gold medals, 9 silver medals and 9 bronze medals. Coming in third place was Japan with 39 medals: 15 gold medals, 12 silver medals and 12 bronze medals.
