Edutainment Channel – 101 Academy

Edutainment Channel – 101 Academy

Opening the door to a novel way of sports teaching

Since the launch of the LCSD Edutainment Channel (the Channel), members of the public have found it useful in obtaining leisure and sports information. The Channel features the 101 Academy to offer various teaching videos, covering a wide range of topics, such as sports, literature, arts, music, theatre, dance, horticulture and flower appreciation. The sports series of the 101 Academy, Learning Sports, introduces the basic knowledge of different sports.

As far as Learning Sports is concerned, the basic knowledge of a sport is introduced in each of the episodes, and the respective national sports association assists in arranging coaches and elite athletes for explanation and sports demonstration. Viewers may understand more about equipment and sports kits, rules for competition, major events and other interesting knowledge from the video clips, and so would find it more enjoyable when watching sports games.

The videos launched in Learning Sports include squash, distance run, tennis, basketball, golf, badminton, volleyball, rugby, table tennis, football and swimming. Videos on other sports will be released in due course.

On another front, the LCSD piloted the Online Interactive Sports Training Programmes this January, offering the public a chance to undergo interactive training in aerobic dance, body-mind stretch, parent-child fitness, Tai Chi, fitness yoga and other sports by means of real-time online videos. Despite the phased resumption of physical community recreation and sports programmes in early May, online classes will be conducted as usual in a bid to provide the public with more options to do exercises via various modes for a healthy lifestyle.

Pilot Scheme on Subvention for New Sports

Pilot Scheme on Subvention for New Sports

Having launched the Pilot Scheme on Subvention for New Sports this year, the LCSD is committed to supporting the development of new sports, with a view to providing the public with more opportunities and options to do exercises, while encouraging their active participation in sports.

The LCSD provides subvention to national sports associations and sports organisations under the Sports Subvention Scheme (the Scheme). Upon a comprehensive review of the Scheme between 2019 and 2020, a series of recommendations and enhancement measures have been made. This pilot scheme was launched in light of the recommendations made in the comprehensive review of the Scheme.

The review report proposed subvention be provided to new sports, and this pilot scheme was launched to devise a new funding regime separate from that of the existing Scheme, with a view to supporting the development of new sports in Hong Kong.

The pilot scheme is now open to application. Each successful application will be offered a maximum of $100,000 or 85 % of the total eligible expenditure of individual activity, whichever is lower. The application period for 2021-2022 will end on 31 July 2021. For enquiries, please feel free to call 2601 8756.

Working hard in preparation for district selections of athletes

The preparatory work is well underway for the 8th Hong Kong Games (HKG), with the launch of the new “HKG Fitness Exercise”. Meanwhile, district selections of athletes and other community participation programmes have already commenced.

The HKG Fitness Exercise, comprised of three sets of exercises, namely “Exercises for Parents and Children”, “Exercises for All” and “Exercises to Stay in Shape”, is suitable for groups and people of all physical abilities to practise, with the HKG’s theme song, “Come on Games on”, adopted as background music. The HKG sports ambassadors and elite athletes were engaged in producing demonstration videos alongside the HKG mascot, Cheering Larry, to encourage all to do exercises in vibrant dance music.

On another front, the HKG webinars, the “New Normal of Sports and Wellness Series”, were held from February to April 2021, disseminating the message of promoting exercises as well as body and mind health. Viewers may watch the videos online. If you are interested in district selections of athletes, you may watch the webinar video clips to get yourself ready both physically and mentally. For the latest news of the HKG, please visit the theme website on the HKG: www.hongkonggames.hk.
