Along with little flowers of many colours much like sparkling stars,
Adorn the floral wall in pointillistic style.

Flamboyant Dahlias,
From late summer to early autumn,
Always bloom like a dazzling smile.
Exquisite Bauhinias,
In cold winter,
Laud the marvel of the seasonal cycle.

The universe resembles a huge garden,
Where one may stroll freely;
Where one may show real sentiments with harmony and respect,
With gratitude in one’s pure and quiescent heart,
While one contemplates the subtle changes of flowers quietly as seasons come and go.

This exhibit is a 12-metre square tulip display, made up of around 14 000 blooming bulbs arranged in the shape of petals.  Visitors can enjoy the dazzling visual feast and take photographs from a variety of angles and perspectives.

The design of this parterre is inspired by the magical moment of joy when a child opens a present.  The highlight is a floral display in the shape of a heart and a sculpture of ribbons.  They are meant to simulate a heart-shaped balloon that pops out of a gift box and the colourful ribbons by its sides to depict the theme of this year’s Flower Show, “Joy in Bloom”.

The front of the parterre features three arched entrances – they are the magical “wish circles” that lead to Fairyland where we meet Thumbelina, who is born among flowers, and we follow her quest for bliss and freedom; in the middle is a pair of flamingoes, indulging in love in the floral paradise; then comes a lovable cherub who creates a sea of flowers in a riot of colours, bringing hope to mankind and nature and creating a better, purer world.  Fronting the sea of flowers are Dahlias, the theme flower, whose colours and shapes are simply gorgeous.  Visitors would feel the joy of being immersed in such a world of flowers in spring.

A mega-scale parade with interesting characters and rainbow-coloured floats turns this year’s Hong Kong Flower Show into a festive party and creates an ambience of bustling fun.

With festive parade as the theme of this parterre, the Grand Marshal brandishes his baton and leads the playful “monkey”, the agile and colourful “snake”, the awe-inspiring “lion”, the mischievous “elephant” and the curious “giraffe” into the venue.  Behind them are two “horses” pulling the floats, “bees” and “ladybirds” in a complementing dance, while music and the sweet scent of flowers fill the air.

This parterre is a wonderful mosaic of tens of thousands of flowers and plants.  Visitors can sit on either side and enjoy the parade.  At night, there would be illuminations and music to complete the festive mood.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has been supporting the Flower Show since 2013.  It became a major sponsor in 2014 and has since been financing the mosaiculture projects by students in a bid to bring the Flower Show to every sector of the community.

This sea of theme flower covers an area of about 177 square metres, where six varieties of Single-flowered and Waterlily Dahlias, in diverse colours form a flower pattern.  They are complemented by delicate plants such as Garden Petunia, Japanese Sage, Cigar Flower, Perfume Flower Tree, and Buddhanail.  There are garden benches around the sea of flowers where visitors can take pictures or sit down for a break, or enjoy the floral displays nearby.

This garden displays an array of special Dahlia varieties from different places including China, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, and Malaysia.  As edible plants are gaining popularity, we have arranged a display of some common edible plants such as beetroot, fig, loquat, radish and roselle, so as to give visitors a closer look and a better idea of what they are.  This interesting collection will introduce an additional dimension to your experience of the Flower Show.

This beautiful flower wall depicts the BrandHK visual identity.  The centrepiece is a stylised “flying dragon” – a mythical and powerful icon that links the city’s historic past with its energetic modernity. The colourful ribbons portray the city’s dynamism, diversity and versatility.

Inspired by the shapes of the theme flower, Dahlia spp., and the vitalizing form of a blooming flower, circular shapes are introduced as the major element for the design of the display. Curvilinear planting beds of various heights and sizes create a dynamic space for incorporating inclusive design in the display. Spherical features allow visitors of all ages to encounter different experiences. Flowers of vibrant colours bring out the joyful and festive atmosphere of the display, highlighting this year’s theme – Joy in Bloom. Spring blossoming flowers and plantings bring liveliness and a sense of new growth into the display area. Complemented by the soft texture of the plantings, various built forms in the display, which symbolize the busy urban developments of our blooming city, allow visitors to find joy and happiness amidst their hectic schedule and busy environment. Some of the features are also created from environmental friendly and recycled materials in order to bring out the message of environmental friendliness to the visitors.

To help develop Hong Kong into a low carbon city, Drainage Services Department is committed to promoting the application of renewable energy. The solar farm at Siu Ho Wan Sewage Treatment Works is one of the outstanding representative examples.

Besides being converted into electricity through the photovoltaics (PV) system, solar energy is also the sole energy source triggering photosynthesis in plants for food production. Our display booth aims to pay tribute to this natural energy by capturing it in day time and reviving it for blossom illumination at night.

Inspired by the revolving imagery of flower opening time-lapse, a serial of undulating petal features is swirled from the central power-generating solar trees mimicking as stamens of the two giant blooming flowers. Walking along the meandering path, visitors can enjoy the blossom of spring meadow as well as to discover and appreciate the use of recycled materials, such as recycled PV panels, wood log, bamboo slat and gabion, within the design.

Highways Department has been providing a safe and efficient road and railway infrastructure system in Hong Kong through continuous development.  Inspired by the main theme of the Hong Kong Flower Show 2018 – “Joy in Bloom”, the display is formed by screens arranged in a “heart” shape.  The different stages of highways development are subtly integrated in the design.  The visitors are reminded of “joyful” memories while they are walking through the “heartful journey” of the display.  Another highlight of the display is the “Acacia Corner” (the Corner) which introduces the Acacia Slopes Enhancement Programme.  The Corner also demonstrates the life cycle of trees and the versatile potential of the Acacia wood through various interactive activities showing how the wood could be “up-cycled” into sculptures and other artwork.

Raising the consciousness of people on environmental conservation and the importance of protecting the Earth is the main theme of the Correctional Services Department’s garden.  Persons in custody, who have received different kinds of vocational training (including bar bending, timber formwork, horticulture and graphic design) had flexibly used various kinds of municipal solid waste, such as wooden pallets, glass bottles and used tyres in the making of this garden.  In addition, the labyrinth design of the garden shows the important role of professional correctional officers in leading people to get back on the right track.

The Housing Department is delighted to showcase its garden, Fun @ Home, which invites visitors to a sea of dazzling dahlias through colourful arches.  A fun experience awaits its guests as they explore the vibrancy and delightful scenery along the way.

The path to the garden is flanked by an array of flower-covered arches in vibrant colours which not only depict the outline of a house but indeed represent the upper part of ““, the oracle-bone graph for the Chinese character “家” (meaning “home”).  The archway is so designed to make visitors feel at home, overflowing with joy and easiness.  Artificial panels in a variety of shapes and forms made from recycled wood fuel their imagination as they look out for one that bears resemblance to the Lion Rock.  The viewers are met with a plant sculpture at the centre of the landscape, highlighting one of Housing Department’s core values to put people first.  In line with this come various designs which are friendly to the environment, such as vertical green panels, bamboo lighting, bioswales and a zero irrigation system.  Childhood toys and games are offered at the green house for amusement and entertainment.  Next to it is a garden plot with a rich profusion of fruits and vegetables adding freshness and vitality to the scene.

To echo the theme of the event “Joy in Bloom”, the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) Authority displays the theme flower “Dahlia” in varied forms and colours, integrated with music, interactive devices and floral arrangements, to encourage public involvement and celebration of the Flower Show through this charming setting.

Surrounded by colourful blossoms and exquisite floral arrangements, the curtains open and reveal an imaginative backdrop for performing art forms like Xiqu. The intimate mini-forest setting of the Art Park, with Nursery Park plants, creates a sense of tranquillity and a stage for a variety of cultural events.

The design concept of our display is about sharing creative experiences within a landscaped setting, to foster cultural exchange between art forms and to encourage interaction with the world of nature.  Our vision is to showcase West Kowloon as setting “A Stage for Joy”.

Welcome to Ocean Park’s colourful garden party, hosted by Whiskers & Friends!  This year’s theme flower, the elegant Dahlia, features prominently throughout the garden, from the vibrant floral sea in the surroundings to the four-metre tall topiary of Whiskers that greets you at the centre.  Looking for tips on living green?  Get inspired to recycle by the fantastic works of floral art made with everyday objects like an old bicycle and swing.  Stop by the Animal Pantry to see some of the many plant species fed to animals at Ocean Park, such as Ligustrum sinense and Ligustrum quihoui. Take a photo with the incredible marine animal topiaries to celebrate biodiversity, and share it to help raise awareness for the Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) programme, whose efforts Ocean Park is proud to be part of!

The name of the garden plot for the International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing, China is “The Four Seasons of Beijing”.  The plot is themed on the change of seasons in time, while the narrative link is the traditional Chinese fan.  The ground landscaping is designed according to the distinct colours of the four seasons, supported with green vegetation for a 3D effect to create the ambience of a Chinese garden. The garden design incorporates traditional elements and modern craftsmanship to express humans’ craving to get close to nature, the incorporation of “green living” into the city, the spiritual pursuit of true simplicity, the inheritance of history and culture, and the vision for a better life.

This exhibition by Macao features a maritime theme.

Macao has evolved from a small fishing port into its current stature as a tourist destination with distinct characteristics through the Maritime Silk Road and cultural contacts with the West.  This display contains maritime features such as the Quartel dos Mouros building (also known by locals as the “Navy’s Barracks”), a barque, an armillary sphere, a battery, and a wall fountain.  The plane layout has wave patterns and curved lines to simulate the ocean, decorated with a variety of plants and flowers to create the magnificent “ocean of flowers”.

The juxtaposition of the designs within and outside the picture highlights the beauty of flowers.  The Dahlias in the picture are like smiling faces, almost popping out of the frame to greet visitors.  They blend with the sea of flowers on the ground, so the virtual and the real offer a glorious scene of flowers in bloom.  A vivacious little girl seems to be inviting visitors to her picturesque world.

Situated in the sub-tropical region, Guangzhou, South China enjoys a long summer and a warm winter.  It therefore boasts an evergreen natural landscape with flowers blooming all year round, and is hailed as “the city of flowers”  The people there have a long history of planting, adoring, appreciating and gifting flowers.  That is why the locals have a saying, “It’s almost Chinese New Year, go to the flower market and bring home good cheer”.

The vernacular Lingnan architecture of South China is an embodiment of both Chinese heritage and western aesthetics.  The garden is designed around the theme “Lingnan Impressions”.  A classic courtyard is deconstructed into various constituents, such as terrace, framed window, guoerqiang (“wok handle wall”), stepping stone, garden wall, bridge and dry stream, and then re-created as floral art pieces, and arranged to form a fascinating scene.

The layout of this garden display is in three parts: a dry stream that stands as the water feature in a courtyard, a guoerqiang crafted with flowers, which is the focus of the display, and a garden wall that is typical in Lingnan courtyards.  Here, the flowers serve as a link to the old Xiguan (West Gate) culture in Guangzhou City.

Apart from an emphasis on heritage, this garden also stresses on the use of new superior flower species as landscaping features to add to the visual appeal.

Situated between the sea and the mountains, Shenzhen is a beautiful city with flowers blooming all year around. While there has been rapid social and economic development, much work has been carried out to improve the urban environment in parallel.  The number of parks in the urban areas has increased from five in the earliest stage to almost one thousand today.

The garden features a diverse collection of flowers, resonating with the park’s architectural theme of nature, ecology and liveability.  Five sets of mirrors are artistically arranged to represent the first five parks of Shenzhen in the old days.  The infinite reflections of the sea of flowers, intermingling in the virtual dimensions of space and time, are a projection of the present and future.  They symbolise the continual environmental development of the city, and allude to its dedicated effort towards the goal of becoming a world-renowned flower city.

Not only a flower city with a boundless future, Shenzhen also prides itself on nature, ecology, arts and technology.

Silk is a special product of Hangzhou, and the city is famous for its good quality of silk. The silk is well applied in the designs of this landscape, which combines with other fashionable elements, layouts, showing the making process of silk. The landscape is also equipped with plants with the characteristics of Hangzhou City, such as: osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans (Thunb.) Lour.), peach (Amygdalus persica L.), camellia (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Ktze.), cherry (Cerasus yedoensis 'Somei-yoshino'), plum (Armeniaca mume Sieb.), mulberry (Morus alba L.),etc, which can embody the characteristics of Jiangnan Garden. The combination of these plants and landscape sketches show the characteristics and history of the Silk Road.

Guangxi, home of the Zhuang people, is reputed as “the place with best scenery in the world”.  This garden features cascades that resemble mountain landscapes to create a harmonious bond between mountains and water.  It also includes plants such as the “panda” of the plant world – Golden Camellia (Camellia chrysantha), so called for its rarity, Jasmine and Osmanthus, which are all indigenous to Guangxi.  The magnificent scenery of the home of the Zhuang people is thus captured in one frame.  The waterwheels, bamboo rafts and bamboo houses, plus the Bauhinias in the background, are symbolic of the harmony between Man and nature.

The setting suggests the connection between the people of Guangxi and Hong Kong who drink from the same water source, and offers the encouraging vision of the people from the two places building a beautiful future together.

The “Songze culture”, an important cultural relic from the late Neolithic period, inspires the design of this garden.  Drawing ideas from the cultural elements and decorative styles of Songze, the plot has archaistic structures built with primitive materials, complemented by nature-inspired embellishments.  The result is a country garden vibrant with forces of the nature.  The design illustrates the recent efforts of Shanghai, which is spearheading to become an “ecological city’ under the “Shanghai Master Plan (2017 – 2035)”, in constructing country parks, greening, and developing ecological facilities.

Through designing this “Nature’s Garden Party”, we are reflecting on the current human condition while envisioning future urban developments.  The archaistic, natural setting transports visitors to the ancient times, where they can, like genies of the wild, freely explore the garden and dance with the Dahlias on a mild spring day.

We all have magic doors in our hearts that lead to mysterious places among which the red one is called “bliss and luck”.  It leads to a gorgeous and colourful garden of the heart.

The elves there have been sowing seeds of happiness which are now blooming into stunning Dahlias all over, symbolising a magnificent prospect.  The innocent elves love this garden most because it is a carefree haven full of life, resplendence and grace.  Most important of all, here lies the secret code for happiness in every stage of their growth since childhood.
