Boys of Two Generations Come Together to Revive a Classic and Subvert the Present

Hong Kong choreographer Yuri Ng, known for his quirky genius, was awarded the Prix d’Auteur at the Rencontres chorégraphiques internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis (Bagnolet) in France in 1998 for Boy Story. The prestigious work, premièred in Hong Kong back in 1996, is a classic which marks a glorious chapter in the history of Hong Kong dance. Ingeniously choreographed for six male dancers, it explores the anxiety towards self-positioning and identity. It portrays the boys’ romantic yet persistent pursuit of dreams in the city through body language.

19 years later in 2015, Ong Yong Lock, a dancer in the première of Boy Story and now the Artistic Director of Unlock Dancing Plaza, has reunited with the original cast comprising performers from Malaysia and invited veteran Taiwanese dancer Chou Shu-yi to revive the classic. The reunion also gave birth to a new combination, Boy Story．Reborn, which undermines the allure of its predecessor and delineates the fearlessness and tenacity of a new, reinvigorated generation. Through drama, deconstruction, reinterpretation, and the 20 years of history between Boy Story and Boy Story Reborn, dancers of a new generation gradually assume their predecessors’ mantle with each body movement and leap on stage.
