As the whole world develops rapidly, the growth of the human population has also accelerated the consumption of the earth’s resources. At the same time, the disposal culture of cities is further damaging the environment. With the development of communications technology, people are starting to attach more and more importance to environmental protection. This article will explain how we can integrate the concept of environmental protection into sport and exercise.
Exercise has been popular in recent years, and people are becoming more aware that physical exercise can promote physical fitness and environmental protection at the same time. First of all, we should choose sportswear that is practical and doesn’t just look fashionable. We should also use them for as long as we can instead of throwing them away without a second thought. If our sportswear no longer fits us but is still new and unworn, we can donate them to the needy or a charity, and if they are torn, we can convert them into wiping cloths and reuse them. We should only wash our clothes when we have enough for a full load so as to reduce water and power consumption.
For the diet, since many venues have a water dispenser, we should bring our own water bottle and avoid buying bottled water to reduce the disposal of plastic bottles. If we must buy a drink, we can choose a beverage produced locally to reduce the fuel consumption caused by long-distance transportation of the product. We should also discard our used plastic bottles and aluminium cans in recycling bins.
During exercise, we can wipe our sweat with handkerchiefs instead of tissue papers. We can also choose to exercise in an outdoor area in our neighbourhood to reduce the need for air conditioning and lighting at an indoor venue, as well as cut down on carbon emissions caused by transportation. This will help us save precious resources. After exercising, we should take a shower instead of a bath and shorten the shower time to use less water and cut down on water expenses.
Green Outdoor Event Commendation Scheme
To promote environmental protection on a larger scale and build a city that can develop sustainably, the Environmental Campaign Committee has collaborated with other organisations to launch the Green Outdoor Event Commendation Scheme and encourage organisations to adopt a series of environmental protection measures during outdoor events.
Participating organisations will receive guidance from technical consultants who will coordinate and help the participating organisations take environmentally-friendly measures when they engage in outdoor events to increase the effectiveness of the measures. The consultants will review their efforts and write a report. Events that meet the standards can be labelled as a Green Outdoor Event to recognise the organisation’s efforts to implement environmental protection measures. In addition to obtaining free professional advice and using resources more effectively when coordinating outdoor events, the organisations will also be able to promote the awareness of environmental protection, reduce the generation of waste and lower the cost of waste disposal. The increasing number of participating organisations has encouraged other organisations to adopt the same measures when organising outdoor events and in turn increase their competitiveness.
