The National Games of the People’s Republic of China (NG), held every four years, are the highest-level and largest national multi-sport event in the country. The State Council announced in August 2021 that the 15th NG, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities (NGD) and the 9th National Special Olympic Games (NSOG) would be co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in 2025, marking the first time that Hong Kong co-hosts a national sports event. The NGD are national multi-sport games featuring sports events under the International Paralympic Committee, while the NSOG encourage participation in sports competitions by persons with intellectual disabilities. The 15th NG will be held from 9 to 21 November 2025 while the 12th NGD and the 9th NSOG will be held from 8 to 15 December 2025. The opening ceremony will take place in Guangzhou and the closing ceremony in Shenzhen.
The co-hosting of the 15th NG, the 12th NGD and the 9th NSOG by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao for the first time is of great significance. The HKSAR Government will organise delegations to participate in the Games proactively and invite members of the sports community and the public to set up an organising committee to handle all matters pertaining to the participation of the delegations in the Games.
The 15th NG will feature competition events and mass participation events. There will be 34 competition events and 23 mass participation events, with the latter covering 19 sports for competition and four sports for demonstration. Hong Kong will stage eight competition events, namely basketball (men’s U22), track cycling, fencing, golf, handball (men), rugby sevens, triathlon and beach volleyball, and one mass participation event of bowling.
There will be 46 events in the NGD and the NSOG. The NGD will comprise 20 Summer Paralympics and Deaflympics events, six Winter Paralympics and Deaflympics events (competitions will be held in areas other than Guangdong Province at an earlier time) and 11 mass participation events, while the NSOG will feature nine competition events. Hong Kong will stage four competition events, namely boccia, wheelchair fencing and table tennis (TT11) for the NGD and table tennis for the NSOG, as well as one mass participation event of para dance sport.
