In the past, Plantain was commonly grown on the slopes near Tso Kung Tam. Farmers collected the bananas and sold in the market. There are two different edible bananas cultivated in Hong Kong - mostly plantain and a small portion is Dwarf Cavendish Banana. Plantain is native to India, Malaysia and the nearby region. After artificial cultivation, different variants have been developed. Besides providing fruit, the banana tree is also used for extracting starch, extracting fibres for making burlap, and for extracting alkaline by burning.
